The Need

When Jesse was preparing to have an abortion she told us: “I am coming to terms with the fact I will not be able to have an ally with me in the procedure room, but am not satisfied with that reality.  I hope Boston Doula project can make the necessary connections to gain access and fill the need in the future.  It’s crazy women are isolated during one of the most stigmatized procedures there is.” Boston Doula Project exists because we never want another person to have to forgo support, like Jesse had to do.

Our Mission

The Boston Doula Project (BDP) provides free, compassionate and empowering support to people experiencing abortion. We promote the doula model of physical, emotional, spiritual and informational support for people throughout the full spectrum of reproductive experiences.

Reproductive Justice

We are deeply inspired by the reproductive justice framework established by women of color. Reproductive justice moves us beyond a focus on rights to control individual bodies toward a broader cultural analysis of systemic forces impacting reproductive lives. This framework affirms the human right to be sexual, to have children, to not have children, and to have families in safe and healthy environments, free from violence.

Our History

Since January 2014 our Education Team has trained 75 abortion doulas, receiving three times as many applications as we have the capacity to accept. We’ve mentored an undergraduate intern through the RRASC program at Hampshire College. Our Public Programs Team has hosted community events generating discussion around reproductive health, rights, and justice. Our doulas have 50 clients who are experiencing abortion and other pregnancy outcomes, and our Clinic Relations Team has worked to grow relationships with clinics and providers.

We’re Growing

We’re working to develop programs beyond abortion support. Many of our volunteers are also trained as birth doulas, which is a significant commitment to make on a volunteer basis. We need to make sure our volunteers do not have to pay out of pocket for the time they spend serving clients. This includes transportation to and from clinics and homes, meetings with local providers, keeping our phone lines working and referral materials printed.

Your Gift

Every little bit helps:

  • $10 will cover a stack of business cards to help clients find us
  • $15 covers travel costs for a volunteer doula to go where a client is having an abortion
  • $25 pays for a set of perinatal Spanish cards to help a doula communicate with clients
  • $50 allows us to provide a doula bag filled with tea, tissues and other care items to share to a client
  • $75 is a scholarship to train a new abortion doula
  • $100 allows us to bring in expert facilitation towards continuing education for doulas
